Department of Psychology
Department Chair: Dr. Sandra Carpenter The Program The UAH graduate psychology program is a small Master's degree program in experimental psychology. Our program is designed to facilitate learning by allowing students to work closely with the faculty in small graduate classes and in conducting research with faculty members. Although some of our students begin the program with an interest in one specific area of experimental psychology, many of our students are still exploring their interests when they begin. By the end of the first year students are encouraged to choose an area of concentration (Developmental, Social, Personality, Cognition, Biopsychology, Applied Experimental) and a faculty advisor with whom to work. During the first year all graduate students are required to take Experimental Design and Statistical Analysis as well as two other graduate courses each semester. During both semesters, faculty and graduate students participate in a research seminar. In this seminar students and faculty present and discuss their research in a casual setting. This seminar not only allows students to learn about faculty members' research, but also allows first year students the opportunity to learn about second year students' research and about how to present and evaluate research. Prior to working on their Master's thesis, students complete graduate courses in research design and statistics, then take 3 hours of concentrated readings under their advisor's supervision. During this time, students conduct a literature review that ideally leads to the Master's thesis proposal. We encourage our students to complete their theses during their second year, although some students find that an extra semester or two is necessary to complete their work. Most of our students go on to Ph.D. programs throughout the country in a variety of experimental psychology disciplines, while a few pursue a clinical psychology Ph.D., and a few find jobs in industry. Admission Requirements In addition to the general requirements for admission
to the School of Graduate Studies, the program requires a minimum combined
score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative portions of the Graduate
Record Examination, an overall grade point average of 3.25 or a minimum
of 3.25 for the last 60 hours of coursework, and three strong positive
recommendations. A minimum of fifteen hours of psychology, approved
by the graduate faculty of the department, is required for admission.
Applications for admission must include three letters of recommendation
from former professors, including at least one from a psychology professor,
a clearly developed statement of intent for graduate study (i.e., why
you want to study psychology at UAH), and at least one (preferably two)
empirical research reports written by the applicant. Recommendations,
the statement of intent, and the experimental paper(s) should be sent
to: The Graduate Committee, Department of Psychology, 335 Morton Hall,
The University of Alabama in Huntsville, Huntsville, AL 35899. Applications
are not reviewed until all materials, including GRE scores, have been
received. The deadline for applicants wishing to be considered for financial
aid is June 1. |
