The Program

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at The University of Alabama in Huntsville is dedicated to offering the best graduate mathematics education possible. There are over a dozen full-time, graduate faculty members in our department, all committed to providing both the formal training and the close personal attention which quality education requires. Many of our faculty are recognized nationally and internationally for their research, and many have been asked to do consulting work for research organizations such as NASA and the Army Missile Command. Some of our faculty research areas include applied dynamical systems, classical and computational fluid mechanics, combinatorics, continuum mechanics, Fourier analysis, functional analysis, generalized functions, graph theory, linear algebra, mathematical biology, mathematical modeling, matrix theory, nonlinear operator theory, numerical analysis, ordinary and partial differential equations, probability, and stochastic processes.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers both master’s level and doctorial level programs. The programs of study leading to master’s degrees are designed to meet the needs of either:

• those students planning on a mathematics oriented career in education or a high tech industry, or
• professionals in science and engineering seeking in-depth knowledge of the mathematics within their fields.
Students can earn either a Master of Arts or a Master of Science in Mathematics. Options include earning the Alabama Class A Teaching Certificate along with the master’s degree.

The doctoral program, designed to enable the student to master a significant body of mathematics and to conduct fundamental research in applied mathematics, leads to a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics. It is administered jointly by the three campuses of the University of Alabama System (Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and Birmingham). While all course work is normally done on a single campus, the resources of all three campuses are available to the student.

Employment upon graduation has proven to be fruitful for our graduate students. Employers such as NASA, the Army Missile Command, Teledyne Allegheny, EER, Science Applications Incorporated, Sparta and COLSA are quick to hire our graduate students. Those students who choose a teaching career are as equally successful. Many students have gone on to teach at schools such as Athens State College, Alabama A & M, Calhoun Community College, Middle Tennessee State University, and the University of West Georgia.

A number of teaching and research assistantships are awarded each year to qualified students. Those wishing such support need to submit a departmental application for assistantship (available at the department’s office or at the department’s web site) and have three references send letters of support.

Admission Requirements
Applicants wishing to be admitted into the graduate program in mathematics must first meet the requirements for admission into the School of Graduate Studies (including satisfactory GRE scores) and are expected to have satisfactorily completed a full sequence in calculus as well as introductory courses in linear algebra, abstract algebra and real analysis (equivalent to UAH courses MA 244, MA 442 and MA 452) and at least two other upper-level mathematics courses. In some cases, the department may allow certain deficiencies to be made up after admission into the program.
