Application

What is the deadline for submission of application packages?

To ensure timely processing of applications, applicants within the U.S. are encouraged to submit all necessary materials at least 3 months prior to desired entrance date.
For international students applying from overseas, applications must be completed by June 1st for Fall and September 15 for Spring semester.

What do I need to submit with my application package?

Domestic Students:

1. Application: Click here for Application forms

Also arrange for the following to be sent

3. One official copy of your academic record from each collegiate institution attended (Note: Must be sent directly from institution)
4. Official GRE , GMAT or MAT scores

International Students - Additional Requirements

5. A certified financial statement submitted as evidence of sufficient finances to cover fees and personal expenses while attending UAH.
Affidavit of Financial Support form is provided on this cd. The completed affidavit must be accompanied by a bank letter that indicates there are sufficient funds
to sponsor you for one calendar year. Health insurance may be purchased through Student Development Services. Proof of continued health insurance coverage must be presented during each semester of enrollment

6. Scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) test sent to UAH directly from Educational Testing Service. You may also submit scores from the Test of Spoken English (TSE) and Test of Written English (TWE).

Can the GRE or MAT be waived?

If you graduated from an accredited college or university five or more years ago and have not been subsequently enrolled since that time, and if you have a record of consistent professional and/or academic achievement as documented on a submitted resume, GRE/MAT requirements may be waived upon recommendation of the department or program chair and the dean of Graduate Studies. You must submit a written request for GRE waiver and submit it to the Graduate Admissions Office along with a resume and/or employment history.

What is the ELPT and can it be waived?

Students whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency by taking the university's English Language Place Test (ELPT) and complete any course work in English as a Second Language (ESL), which the test indicates is required.

Students who present an official TOEFL score of at least 600 (written test) or 250 (computer test) will be exempted from the standardized listening, structure and vocabulary comprehension portion of the ELPT.

Students who present an official score of at least 50 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE) will be exempted from the oral interview portion of
the ELPT.

Students who present an official score of at least 5 on the Test of Written English (TWE) will be exempted from the writing portion of the ELPT.

Students who have earned a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited U.S. institution will be exempted from the TOEFL, TSE, TWE and ELPT requirements above. Students with degrees from Non-U.S. institutions that have English as their primary language of instruction (e.g.
United Kingdom, Canada, etc.) may petition the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies for an exemption from the ELPT.

How long does it take to process my application?

Your application package will be forwarded to the department only after all materials have been received. Departments will generally make a decision within 2 to 3 weeks. It will usually take another 2 weeks to complete the admissions processs.

How do I go from masters degree recipient to doctoral candidate?

Fill out an application and then contact the Office of Graduate Admissions at (256)824-6198. You will be required to complete an application for your Ph.D. program.
There will be no application fee assessed.

How many hours do I register for?

Full-time registration is 9 credit hours/semester (Fall and Spring). 6 hours is considered full-time in the Summer.

How do I get a Graduate Teaching or Graduate Research Assistantship?

Graduate Teaching and Research Assistantships are awarded by individual departments and programs. Please contact departments and/or faculty directly for availability of openings in your area.

How much do assistantships pay?

A full time GTA or GRA typically covers full tuition benefits, full (single person) insurance benefits as well as a stipend. Stipend rates vary from department to department and the current per-semester ranges are as follows:

Level I = $3375 - $6300 (Pre-masters)
Level II = $4725 - $7200 (Post-preliminary exam)
Level III = $5625 - $9900 (Ph.D. Candidate)

What is the deadline for Financial Aid?

The recommended deadline date to consider applications for financial aid for the following Fall semester is February 15. For all other academic semesters the application deadline is six weeks before the start of the semester.

What does "notarized" mean?

It means to authenticate. Usually a signature is authenticated by a Notary Public who is a person legally empowered to witness a signature.

Can I get a copy of my transcript from XYZ University from UAH to use for…?

Applications and transcripts become property of UAH. We are not able to honor requests for transcript copies. Students should contact the institution where they were enrolled for transcripts.
